People are running around, trying to find different ways to look younger. But one fail-safe way to look older is by smoking. Smoking affects your skin, hair and teeth in the worst way possible and makes you look years older than you actually are. In 1985, the term 'smoker's face' was added to the dictionary. Its description includes lines, wrinkles, cheek lines, gaunt features, and pallid, grey skin.

The damage caused to your skin by years of smoking is intense and irreparable. So take a look at the effects of smoking on the skin and quit before it is too late.

Ageing Skin
Do you try to protect your skin from the sun to prevent ageing? Smoking makes your skin age much more faster than sun exposure. One puff of cigarette smoke causes one trillion free radicals to be produced in the lungs, causing an inflammatory response that circulates through the body. The chemicals in cigarettes replace the oxygen needed by your skin. They impede the absorption of vitamin C whose function is to preserve collagen, which keeps the skin looking youthful. Deterioration of collagen results in aged skin.

Skin Cancer
Research has shown that smoking increases the risk of skin cancer. It was found that cigarette and pipe smokers were twice as likely to contract skin cancer. The chances of contracting skin cancer is more for current smokers than former ones.

Wrinkles
The elasticity of your skin is broken down by smoking causing wrinkles. If you are a heavy smoker, the chances that you will get wrinkles are five times more than non-smokers. You get crows feet around your eyes from trying to close them while smoking. Due to the constant contractions made by your mouth during smoking, you will get creases.

Skin tone
Smoking makes the individual look more gaunt and aged. It causes an uneven, discoloured skin tone. It gives you a murky or yellowish grey complexion. You also have noticeable pallor and dry skin.

Thin Skin
Smoking affects blood circulation, by restricting blood supply and causes the vessels to contract. This restrict the amount of oxygen received by blood vessels to replenish skin cells. Due to poor circulation, it was found that the skin of a smoker is thinner than that of a non-smoker. The skin also begins to take on a leathery texture.

Other effects
Smoke clogs your pores with resin and tar, leading to blackheads. It dehydrates your skin and darkens your lips. It increases the risk of viral infections like warts. Smoking dehydrates your skin and gives it a discoloured, unnatural and unhealthy appearance.

If the threat of cancer is not enough to turn you away from this deadly habit, then look at the various harmful effects of smoking on your skin and throw that cigarette away!
